CA State incentives

  1. Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP): See below
  2. Net Energy Metering (NEM): While not a rebate, NEM allows residential customers in California who generate their own electricity from solar power to feed excess electricity back into the grid in exchange for a credit. This can significantly reduce the overall cost of home energy use.
  3. Property Tax Exclusion for Solar Energy Systems: In California, the added value of a solar panel system to a home is not included in property tax assessments. This exclusion applies until the end of 2024 and effectively prevents your property taxes from rising because you've installed a solar system.
  4. Local Utility Rebates: Some local utilities in California offer additional incentives for solar and energy storage. These can vary significantly depending on where you live and which utility serves your area.

Federal Incentives

Investment Tax Credit (ITC): The ITC allows you to deduct a significant percentage of the cost of installing a solar energy system from your federal taxes. As of 2023, the tax credit is 30% for solar systems placed in service between 2022 and 2032. The percentage will decrease slightly in the following years unless renewed or revised by Congress.

Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)

The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is a significant initiative designed to promote the adoption of renewable energy sources, including residential solar, in various states such as California. SGIP provides financial incentives to homeowners who install solar energy systems coupled with energy storage solutions on their properties. This program is particularly advantageous as it helps to offset the upfront costs associated with the purchase and installation of solar panels and batteries. By doing so, SGIP not only makes solar power more accessible to a broader range of homeowners but also enhances energy resilience and independence by supporting the integration of battery storage. This storage capability is critical, as it allows for the utilization of stored solar energy during peak demand times or outages, further promoting sustainable energy use and reducing reliance on traditional power grids.
